Popular belief: As more and more people become health aware, specially
designed vegetable and fruit juice parlours too are gaining popularity in
the metros.

Ground reality:
Twenty-eight-year-old Rachna Kumari
would agree. Her Bandra outlet, J-Kart, has
customers coming in from various parts of the city.
J-Kart doesn't just offer fruit and vegetable juices. “There's a huge
amount of research put into it,” says Rachna. “For instance, certain root
vegetables shouldn’t be combined with certain leaf vegetables.”
While there are higher-end juice parlours in the
city—like Ameritos—J-Kart caters to the suburban
health conscious crowd.
“People are aware of the goodness of juice,” says Rachna. “And most of the
gym-going people wish to start their day with just a glass of juice.”
J-Kart doesn't offer the regular sweet-lime and orange combinations.
Instead, the focus is on combinations like
Carrot-Lemon-Apple-Cabbage-Ginger or Granny Smith-Green Grapes, which have
definite health benefits.
Rachna says, diabetics and weightconscious
people stand to benefit from such mixed juices. “Drinking something like
wheat grass shots or bitter gourd shots helps overcome specific diseases.” Upmarket juice parlours tend
to be more hygienic than your regular roadside cart. And there is no
preservative used. With affiliations with health clubs, parlours
like J-Kart get a nutritionist to prescribe what a specific body-type
needs. Those ordering on a monthly basis are also given discounts.
